Glossary

A lot of terminology is used in the plastering trade and here we hope we have simplified it in ‘laymans’ terms so you can understand what is happening on your project. Contact us if you have any further questions.

Scud Coat - A very strong mix of sand, cement and waterproofing mixture thrown at a wall firstly to provide a good key and uniform suction for later work.
Scratch Coat - A strong sand, cement and waterproofer mix trowel applied to straighten walls and very important coat in keeping out damp.
Finish Render Coat. Smooth/Nap Finish - A similar mix to scratch coat but would include lime for strength and breathability.
Roughcast/Wet Dash - A wet stone mix thrown uniformly at the wall. Excellent weather protection and a very popular finish.
Dry Dashing - A dry stone such as marble thrown at a freshly coated wall.Maintenance free.Unlimited colours,blends and mixes available.
K Rend/Weber/Monocuse - Machine applied directly onto block wall. Has a scraped texture finish, excellent weather resistance and durability. Large range of colours and maintenance free.
Terylene - A roughcast type finish applied to a smooth rendered wall.Maintenance free.
Bands - Generally a smooth band around doors and windows.Can differ in size and design.
Quoins - A stone effect on corners.Patterns and sizes differ depending on buildings.Very grand and makes a building stand out.
Float Coat - A sand, cement and waterproofer mix straightened, plumbed and left ready to receive final skim coat.
Bonding - A lightweight basecoat plaster for use over low suction backgrounds. Generally used on concrete.
Plasterboard - Standard boards:Acoustic boards:Fire performance:Impact performance:Moisture resistant:Thermal performance. Several other specialist boards also available.
Marble Plastering - Rich finishes such as Lucidato,Marmorino or metallic for that special touch. Sheer class and achievable by our craftsman .
Lime Plastering - Mainly used in conservation and restoration projects.
MF Ceilings - Plasterboard fixed to a concealed grid. Can create a void for services or kept tight to structure.
Insulated Plasterboards - Stuck to the wall with a compound and mechanically fixed. Excellent thermal performance and strengh.Comes in various thickness and finished with a skim coat.
Gypliner Wall Systems - A cost effective frame for lining walls. It is an independent metal frame for internal non load bearing applications. Finished with plasterboard of choice and skim coat.
Gyproc Floating Coat - A plaster with high compressive strength used mainly on concrete blocks. Skim coat on top to finish.
